Every year I get smarter and smarter when it comes to taking my own kids photos. The realization came to me after years of pulling my own hair out and failing (or so it felt) at getting good shots of my kids. A few facts about me: I am a very patient person; I love kids; I think I have very well behaved kids that usually listen well; most kids love me; I know trickery and I carry tricks in my camera bag for those tough kids to make smile; I love photographing kids; I love a good challenge. None of this matters when it comes to photographing my own kids. It’s a challenge like no other. My sweet little children turn into these ornery kids who I swear are out to make me go insane come picture day! So what I realized is that I have to trick them into doing something fun and making them forget that I am taking their photos. You may have seen another post here on my blog of their birthday pictures this past summer. We started those in a bakery where I told them to just sit there and eat goodies, drink milk etc. They looked at me like I was crazy and then I watched them as they blew bubbles in their milk and giggled uncontrollably. What I got were some images I will always cherish and some happy kids that actually had fun. This shoot I knew I wanted a large hill, some place they had never been before. I wanting them running to the top of the hill, rolling down it, doing whatever they wanted, and stopping for just a few posed shots as well. Guess what, it worked! I love these images and like any photos I have of them good and bad I will cherish them always. I hope soon to capture some memories of your children and trick them as well!
